The Sandstone Restaurant is owned and operated by Pam & Don Spears.
Pam, the daughter of the late Herbert & Isobel Roberts, grew up in North Lake and left to join the Military in 1970. She met and married Don and they started their family in 1971. Don served 25 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and retired in 1995. Pam, Don and family lived at several Canadian Forces bases in Canada and also spent 4 years in Lahr, Germany.
Pam worked as an Insurance Claims Adjuster in Alberta for 24 years before moving back to PEI in April, 2009 and opening the Sandstone Restaurant. Don, who was working in Alberta's "oil patch" as a Safety Officer, was laid off in September 2009 and joined Pam on PEI which has become their permanent home.
The building which houses the Sandstone Restaurant (formerly the Red Stone Restaurant), was a large warehouse for dry moss and was vacant since the 80's when restoration began in 2001. After a storm, residents along the north shore of PEI would gather on the beaches to harvest the Irish moss, loading it onto horse-drawn carts or tractor-drawn trailers and transporting it to drying plants. Once dry, the moss was taken here and then shipped all over the world. On the walls you will see some of the copper nameplates that were left behind in the old building as memories of the moss's destination history.
North Lake is also known as the "Tuna Capital of the World". The bluefin tuna has attracted thousands of fishermen to the area in hopes of catching one of these monster fish. North Lake lays claim to the world record catch of a 1,496 lb bluefin by rod and reel. North Lake has hosted the Canada Tuna Cup Challenge for a number of years.
The "lake" houses soft shell clams, mussel beds, and further up stream where the water becomes fresh, an abundance of sea run trout and salmon. A family of bald eagles has also made their home there.
Look around - what a view - an ocean to the north, a lake to the south, a wind farm to the southeast and don't forget North Lake Harbour. You can enjoy our delicious seafood chowder, an order of mussels, our famous fish and chips, a lobster dinner or one of our many delicious dishes on the menu and enjoy the view no matter where you sit.
Other attractions close by include East Point Lighthouse, Elmira Railway Museum and Basin Head Beach.
Take in the scenic and enjoy your meal at our fully licensed family restaurant. See you there!
